The Messerschmitt Bf 110, a twin-engine heavy fighter, served with the Luftwaffe throughout the Second World War, even though pilots often criticized its lack of maneuverability in aerial combat. Particularly during the early stages of the war, the aircraft played a vital role in supporting the advance of ground forces; later, it also proved highly effective as a night fighter. The Bf110D was designed as a "long-range destroyer" (*Langstrecken-Zerstörer*). These heavy fighters—or fighter-bombers—were based on the C-series; many were stationed in Norway to carry out attacks against Great Britain. Within the Bf110D variant, the D-3 featured an extended rear fuselage, which provided space for a life raft—intended for use in the event of an emergency landing on water. This long-range fighter could carry two 300-liter auxiliary fuel tanks or 900-liter jettisonable drop tanks mounted under the wings. Additionally, it was possible to attach two 500 kg bombs (using an ETC500 rack) to a mounting point beneath the fuselage.
