The Curtiss A-25A Shrike - an aircraft ordered for the US Army Air Force (USAAF) - was also used by the US Navy (USN) during World War II, unlike the Helldiver. Curtiss manufactured 900 Shrikes at its St. Louis plant; the maiden flight took place in September 1942. While the first ten aircraft featured folding wings, this design element was soon deemed unnecessary and abandoned; production of the A-25A ended in late 1943. Other differences from the Helldiver included the absence of an arresting hook, larger wheels, a pneumatic tail wheel, and similar modifications.
