The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was originally conceived as a long-range escort fighter and "destroyer" (Zerstörer). This twin-engine, three-seat heavy fighter was developed in response to a requirement issued by the Luftwaffe in 1934; the prototype made its maiden flight in 1936. Once the DB 601 B-1 engines finally became available in late 1938, mass production of the Bf 110C was able to begin in earnest. There were seven main variants of the Bf 110C; these were the first versions to see widespread operational use. While they achieved some success during the campaigns in Poland and France, they proved hopelessly outclassed during the Battle of Britain - unable to effectively protect Luftwaffe bombers against more agile Spitfires and Hurricanes.
