Based on the M2A1/M3 scout car, the M2 series of half-tracks was originally intended to serve as a reconnaissance vehicle and prime mover for the 105mm howitzer. Although shorter than the later M3 half-track, this American vehicle provided space for ten passengers in the rear compartment. With a total production run of 13,058 units, the M2 series stands as a highly significant Allied vehicle.

Compared to the M2, the M2A1 featured an elevated M49 ring mount positioned above the front passenger seat. This allowed the heavy machine gun to be fired in any direction, including against aerial targets, while the original wraparound machine gun rail was omitted.
