The 8-wheeled armored reconnaissance vehicle (Panzerspähwagen) Sd.Kfz. 234/4 -much like the Sd.Kfz. 251/22 - was an emergency solution designed to make the PaK 40 anti-tank gun mobile, allowing it to be used more effectively in defensive operations. Its 220 hp diesel engine (retained from the original design) enabled a top speed of up to 90 km/h. This speed could be reached in both forward and reverse, which is why the vehicle was equipped with two driver stations. Approximately 70 to 90 units were built and deployed.
