The Willys MB is a lightweight U.S. off-road vehicle from World War II and one of the most well-known predecessors to the modern-day Jeep.

It served in reconnaissance, as a liaison and transport vehicle, for deploying radio teams, and as a towing vehicle for light trailers. It was used by U.S. forces and numerous Allied armies.

Its compact design, excellent off-road capability, and ease of maintenance made it highly versatile. In its standard configuration, it was unarmored. Characteristic features include flat front fenders and—on most units—a radiator grille with nine vertical slots.

It was frequently equipped with a .30-cal or .50-cal machine gun mounted on an M31 pedestal, positioned behind or between the front seats.

Field modifications by troops—particularly in Europe during 1944–45—often featured additional steel plating on the front and along the side entry points; in some cases, the windshield was replaced by a metal plate with vision slits. The primary role of such jeeps was armed reconnaissance, security, and fire support.
