The MH-6J Little Bird and the AH-6J Little Bird are both based on the MD 530F and were developed by the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment for special operations. They share the same airframe, identical engines, and largely the same avionics. Both feature modern navigation systems with GPS/inertial navigation and FLIR night-vision sensors, and are designed for operations at night and in adverse weather conditions. However, the crucial difference lies in their respective operational roles.

The MH-6J is the transport and mission-support variant. Its primary task is the precise insertion and extraction of special forces units, such as Delta Force or the 75th Ranger Regiment. A distinctive feature is the externally mounted seating (External Personnel System - EPS), which allows for the transport of up to six soldiers. Additionally, the MH-6J can be equipped with fast-rope systems, winches, or other specialized gear. This version generally lacks fixed armament, as the available space is utilized for personnel and equipment.

The "Night Stalkers" are the members of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) (160th SOAR), a US Army special operations unit. Their primary mission is to provide helicopter transport and aerial support for special operations forces such as Delta Force, the US Navy SEALs, and the US Army Rangers.

The unit was established following the failed hostage rescue attempt during Operation Eagle Claw. In doing so, the US military recognized the need for a specially trained helicopter unit for covert and particularly demanding missions. Since their inception, the Night Stalkers have participated in numerous operations in Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other crisis zones.

Their motto is "Night Stalkers Don't Quit." The unit's soldiers specialize in operating at night, in difficult terrain, and under extreme weather conditions. Their best-known aircraft include the MH-60 Black Hawk, the MH-47 Chinook, and the AH-6 and MH-6 Little Bird helicopters.
