The Panther was a medium tank designed to replace the Panzer III and IV in German tank units.
The 23-litre Maybach HL230 V12 petrol engine was an improved version of the Tiger's HL210 engine. Its engine bore was increased from 125 mm to 130 mm.
The engine could produce 690 hp, which was almost 200 hp more than the later V-55 engine used in the T-54 tank.
