The Mark A Whippet was a British medium tank of the First World War, which entered service in 1918. It was designed to complement the slow, heavy Mark tanks and exploit their breakthroughs in battle. With a top speed of around 13 km/h, the Whippet was significantly faster than the heavy British tanks of its time and could be deployed flexibly on the battlefield. Its armament consisted of several machine guns mounted in an armored superstructure, enabling effective engagement of infantry targets. The Mk. A Whippet proved particularly effective in the Allied offensives of 1918 and is considered an important step in the development of mobile armored units, which later formed the basis of modern armored warfare.
