The Mark IV was developed by Great Britain in 1917, in the midst of the trench warfare of World War I. Early tanks like the Mark I had shown that while armored vehicles could achieve breakthroughs, they still had many weaknesses (e.g., mechanical failures, short range).

The Mark IV was designed to address these problems:
  • Improved reliability
  • Better armor
  • Safer fuel management (earlier models were highly prone to fire)
Deployment:
The Mark IV saw its first major use at the Battle of Messines. It became particularly famous at the Battle of Cambrai, where hundreds of tanks were deployed in a coordinated manner for the first time.

Significance:
It demonstrated the potential of tanks for breakthrough operations and was a crucial step towards modern mechanized warfare.
