The Chieftain was the British Army's main battle tank from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Starting in the mid-1980s, the tank was retrofitted with Stillbrew armor plating to protect it against the more modern Soviet weapons systems.
The Mk. 11 was the last version, with features such as the large side targeting light being replaced with a TOGS (Thermal Observation and Gunnery System), which the Challenger later received from the start.
Further planned developments (Mk. 12, 13) were discontinued in favor of the Challenger.
