The first M113s were sent to the United States Army Europe to replace the M59 APCs of the mechanized infantry beginning in 1961.
First used in combat by the South Vietnamese Army (ARVN) in April 1962, the M113 was the U.S. Army's most widely used armored vehicle in the Vietnam War and was used to break through jungles to attack and overrun enemy positions.
It was widely known to Allied forces as the "APC" or "ACAV" (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle).
From 1964, the gasoline engine was replaced by a 6V-53 Detroit diesel engine with 215 hp (160 kW) to take advantage of the diesel engine's better fuel economy and lower fire risk.
