The StuH 42 and the Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G were based on the same Panzer III chassis and were among the most important armored support vehicles of the Wehrmacht. Both vehicles were produced concurrently and differed primarily in their armament and intended role.

The early version of the StuG III Ausf. G was equipped with the 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 assault gun and was mainly used for anti-tank warfare and direct fire support. Characteristic features included the redesigned superstructure with its laterally offset commander's cupola, the early gun mantlet, and the still-simple construction details of the first production series.

The StuH 42 (Sturmhaubitze 42) was developed as an infantry support vehicle and was armed with the 10.5 cm Sturmhaubitze 42 howitzer. It could fire high-explosive shells with significantly greater impact and was particularly well-suited for engaging field fortifications, buildings, and infantry concentrations. Externally, it differed from the StuG III primarily in the howitzer's shorter, larger gun barrel.

Both vehicle types saw service on all major fronts from 1943 onward and complemented each other within assault gun battalions. While the StuG III Ausf. G primarily engaged enemy tanks, the StuH 42 assumed the role of an armored support vehicle. Together, they formed a cost-effective and efficient alternative to conventional main battle tanks and contributed significantly to the combat power of German armored units.
