Compared to the previous Ausf. F, the vehicle had reinforced frontal armor and incorporated various design improvements from the Panzer III chassis. It was armed with the powerful 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 assault gun, which could be used both to support infantry and to engage enemy tanks. Thus, the assault gun increasingly evolved from a purely support vehicle into an effective tank destroyer.
The Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. F/8 saw action from the end of 1942 onward, primarily on the Eastern Front, but also in North Africa and other theaters of war. Its combination of low profile, good firepower, and relatively simple production made it a valuable vehicle for the German armored forces. The Ausf. F/8 also formed the basis for the subsequent Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G, which was produced in large numbers and would become the most produced variant of the Sturmgeschütz family.
