The name C-HET stands for Commercial Heavy Equipment Transporter.
The design was based on the commercially available Oshkosh F2365 truck, which was adapted to the military's requirements in order to keep costs as low as possible and begin production as quickly as possible.
They proved their worth in transporting the M60 series main battle tanks of the time.
During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, the M911s were primarily used to transport M1 Abrams tanks.
However, they exhibited significant overloading when loads exceeded 60 tons. Some are still used as heavy-duty transporters of other military equipment, such as engineering equipment.
While the US Army had been equipped with the M1 Abrams since the early 1980s, the US Marine Corps still relied on the proven M60A1 tank.
To adapt it to the threats of the modern battlefield, the M60A1 was repeatedly upgraded, including with reactive armor. These Marine tanks were also deployed in the first Gulf War, Operation Desert Storm:
In early February 1991, 200 M60A1s of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force (1MEF) crossed the border into Kuwait north of Khafji in Saudi Arabia. In the Battle of Kuwait International Airport, they encountered an Iraqi force with T-54, T-55, T-62, Type 69, and T-72 tanks. The Marines won the battle, destroying approximately 100 Iraqi tanks and losing only one M60A1 (to an anti-tank mine).
