It was one of the first modern low-wing monoplanes to enter service with the RAF, which received the Battle from 1937 onwards. The Battle was elegant and pleasant to fly, but it was underpowered.
A single Merlin engine was simply not enough for such a large aircraft.
This was clear even before the start of the Second World War.
Nevertheless, Battles were assigned to more than 40 RAF squadrons.
Ten of these were transferred to France as part of the AASF and used against the German attack in 1940.
The superiority of the Bf 109E and the Battle's high vulnerability to flak took a heavy toll.
The Battles were withdrawn from the front lines.
However, they became an important part of the Commonwealth training system.
Until the end of the war, they were used for training in many areas in Great Britain, Canada, Australia, and Africa.
