The manufacturer called it the Curtiss Hawk Model 75, and after further development, it proved to be one of the best and most modern aircraft of the early phase of World War II.
Its performance was consistently very good, and it was known for its excellent maneuverability, superior to that of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 and the Hurricane.
Its various versions, of which over 1,000 were produced, were used by the air forces of over a dozen countries – from South Africa to Finland and from Brazil to China – under various names.
The most important user of the Curtiss H-75 was France.
It was ordered in several series with the designations A1 to A4, which differed in armament and engines, and over 400 were delivered.
They proved to be the Luftwaffe's best fighters in the opening months of World War II.
Many French aces fought and achieved victories over the Luftwaffe in aircraft of this type, as did Polish and Czechoslovak pilots fighting in defense of France.
After the Armistice, numerous Curtiss aircraft were evacuated to French Africa, where they formed the backbone of the Vichy state's aviation.
Some of the French aircraft captured from the Germans were transferred to Finland, where they fought successfully against the Red Army until the end of the war.
All production models of the Curtiss H75 were equipped with radial engines.
When the airframe was converted to the Allison inline engine, a completely new and legendary aircraft was born: the Curtiss P-40, of which over 13,000 were produced.
