The OSA, OSB, OSAT, and OSBT variants belonged to Bedford's military O-series and were technically based on proven civilian truck designs from the late 1930s. The Bedford OSA was the standard general-service version with a payload of approximately 1.5 tons, rear-wheel drive (4x2), and a robust six-cylinder gasoline engine producing around 70–75 hp. The closely related Bedford OSB had a longer wheelbase and was preferred for larger bodywork. The Bedford OSAT and Bedford OSBT variants were specifically designed as tipper trucks, primarily for engineering and construction tasks such as earthmoving, road construction, and airfield development.

Historically, these vehicles were produced for the British Armed Forces from around 1939 and complemented the better-known OX and OY series. They saw service in various theaters of operation during World War II and were characterized by simple, reliable engineering and ease of maintenance. The tipper truck variants, in particular, played a crucial role in military infrastructure projects, while the OSA and OSB served as versatile transport vehicles. Overall, these models were exemplary of Britain's standardized, mass-produced logistics vehicle manufacturing during the war.
