The Porsche 935 was one of the most successful race cars of its era, dominating endurance racing in the late 1970s in particular. Car number 70 achieved a surprise victory at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans, thereby making motorsport history.

The Winning Car
The Porsche 935 #70 was driven by Klaus Ludwig, Don Whittington, and Bill Whittington. The vehicle was fielded by the private Whittington Brothers team. The victory was particularly remarkable because the privately entered Porsche beat numerous heavily favored factory and specialized race cars.

The 935 was based on the Porsche 911 Turbo and developed for the Group 5 category of the time. Its defining features included a significantly widened body, aerodynamic fenders, a large rear wing, and mechanical components extensively modified to meet regulatory requirements.

Technical Specifications
The Porsche 935 was powered by a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged flat-six engine. Depending on the tuning stage, the racing engines could produce well over 600 hp. For Le Mans, the focus was not only on high engine output but also on reliability, aerodynamics, and the efficient use of fuel and tires.

The car raced in 1979 featured the 935's signature aggressive silhouette, with widely flared wheel arches and a distinctive rear wing. The bodywork modifications characteristic of Group 5 gave the Porsche its unmistakable appearance.

Le Mans 1979
The victory at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans marked one of the greatest achievements for a private Porsche team. The Porsche 935 #70 completed 320 laps, covering a distance of approximately 4,745 km. It was particularly impressive that the car remained reliable throughout the grueling demands of a 24-hour race.

This success underscored the exceptional competitiveness of the Porsche 935 and established car #70 as one of the most famous Porsche race cars in the history of Le Mans.
