With the Enhanced Main Battle Tank (EMBT), Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and Nexter Systems are presenting a joint development project designed to close the technological gap between the current Leopard 2 family and the future Main Ground Combat System (MGCS). The EMBT combines German and French tank design philosophies in a modular concept geared to the future requirements of modern battlefields.
The design continues to be based on the Leopard 2 hull, known for its robust structure, excellent driving dynamics, and high reliability. The completely redesigned turret, however, is based on French Leclerc technology but has been comprehensively redesigned for a modular and digitally networked system design.
The EMBT's striking turret design is clearly recognizable at its current stage of development as a new generation of unmanned turret technology. The compact design allows for a crew reduction to three (commander, driver, gunner) while simultaneously improving survivability.
The main armament in this version consists of a 120 mm L/52 smoothbore gun with an automatic loading system. In addition to modern KE rounds, the system also supports programmable multi-purpose ammunition (HE-MP). The integration of the Rheinmetall 130 mm gun is already technically planned and will be tested in future trials.
The main armament is complemented by a remotely controlled weapon station (RCWS) with a 12.7 mm machine gun, which is fully integrated into the sensor architecture. This weapon station serves both close-range defense and countering threats from drones.
The EMBT is equipped with a 360° situational awareness system consisting of high-resolution day and thermal imaging cameras, laser warning sensors, and infrared detectors. All data is consolidated in a Battlefield Management System (BMS), which provides the crew with a complete tactical situation overview in real time.
The protection concept includes a combination of multi-layer composite armor, modular reactive power packages, and active protection systems. Trophy or EuroTrophy APS can be optionally integrated, which actively neutralize incoming missiles. A soft-kill system also provides electronic defense against guided missiles.
The EMBT is currently being tested with the proven MTU MB 873 Ka-501 diesel engine (1,500 hp). Combined with a modified Renk transmission, mobility remains at the level of the Leopard 2A7V. In parallel, work is underway on a hybrid boost system that will provide additional power in the short term while simultaneously ensuring the power supply for the extensive electronics.
The EMBT is currently in an advanced testing and integration phase within the KNDS group. A pre-production series could begin in 2028/29, depending on political decisions and procurement plans. The vehicle is intended less as a replacement than as a technological transition platform – a bridge between proven Leopard technology and the future European next-generation systems.
With its combination of a proven base, innovative turret design, and digital networking architecture, the EMBT is considered one of the most interesting European tank designs of our time. It exemplifies a new approach in tank construction: modular, networked, upgradeable – and thus consistently future-proof.
