With over 30,000 units built, the Messerschmitt Bf109 is the most produced fighter aircraft in history; within the series, the G-6 was the most numerous variant, with 13,000 aircraft manufactured. Entering production in the summer of 1943, the Bf109 G-6 was distinguished by characteristic engine cowlings featuring a small bulge and an air intake beneath the right-hand nose panel (known in German as a "Beule"), as well as flatter fairings for the machine guns in the upper nose area. In late 1943, the Bf109 G-6 was fitted with the so-called "Erla-Haube" (Erla canopy), which featured fewer structural struts and thus provided improved visibility.
These features were found on many late-production Bf109 G-6 models. From August 1943, 21 cm rocket launchers were mounted under the wings on both sides to counter formations of heavy four-engine bombers approaching from Great Britain. The Bf109 G-6 saw service on both the Western and Eastern Fronts; it proved superior, particularly in combat against Soviet adversaries, and remained in service until the end of World War II.
