The British ammunition boxes for L31A3 105mm shells were developed for the safe transport and storage of ammunition for the L118 Light Gun. The robust P85-type steel box protects the ammunition from damage and the elements while enabling rapid, safe handling during operations. Each box contains two complete L31A3 105mm high-explosive shells, which are further encased in protective plastic or cardboard tubes. Fuzes are carried either separately or—depending on packaging regulations—already fitted, and are clearly indicated by the box's external markings.

The ammunition boxes feature a rectangular steel body with a hinged lid, side carrying handles, and numerous stenciled markings. These provide information such as ammunition type, lot number, NATO Stock Number (NSN), weight, and fuze type. A filled box weighs approximately 43 kilograms (94 lb) and can be carried by two soldiers or moved using mechanical handling equipment.

For resupply to firing positions, multiple ammunition boxes are stacked on a standardized wooden pallet and secured with steel or plastic strapping. This palletization allows for rapid loading and unloading by forklifts or cranes and facilitates transport on trucks, trailers, or all-terrain vehicles such as the Supacat ATMP. Especially during air-mobile operations, complete pallets could be delivered by helicopter to forward positions, significantly enhancing artillery operational readiness.

The L31A3 high-explosive shell has been a standard munition for British 105mm artillery for decades and is used with the L118 as well as other compatible guns. Its robust transport packaging is a key component of British ammunition logistics and was designed for use in a wide range of climatic conditions. The combination of standardized ammunition box and pallet enables safe storage, efficient resupply, and rapid availability of ammunition right at the firing position.
