The T-72B3 equipped with the Arena active protection system represents a comprehensive combat upgrade of the Russian T-72B main battle tank. This modernizing concept fuses the robust, combat-proven chassis of the Soviet classic with advanced sensor technology and active defensive systems to meet the heightened demands of the modern battlefield.
The most defining feature of this variant is the Arena (or Arena-M) hard-kill active protection system. Utilizing a tower-mounted radar sensor suite, the system automatically detects incoming threats—such as anti-tank guided missiles and rocket-propelled grenades—across a full 360-degree radius. Once a projectile is identified as an immediate hazard, Arena detonates an interceptor charge within milliseconds, destroying or neutralizing the incoming threat via directed fragmentation just before impact. This active defense is further complemented by layers of Kontakt-5 or newer Relikt explosive reactive armor (ERA), offering the vehicle and its crew enhanced protection against tandem-charge warheads and kinetic energy penetrators.
The tank’s firepower and mobility have also been thoroughly overhauled. Its fully stabilized 125 mm 2A46M-5 smoothbore gun can fire modern armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds as well as gun-launched anti-tank guided missiles. The upgraded Sosna-U fire-control system—featuring an integrated thermal sight and laser rangefinder—provides both the gunner and commander with a high first-round hit probability under any weather or lighting conditions. Providing the necessary agility for the roughly 46-ton vehicle is a powerful V-92S2F diesel engine delivering 1,130 horsepower, ensuring reliable mobility even across challenging terrain.
