Powered by the powerful Bristol Centaurus 18-cylinder radial engine, the Sea Fury was capable of speeds exceeding 450 mph (740 km/h), giving it performance comparable to many early jet aircraft while retaining the excellent low-speed handling characteristics required for carrier operations.
The FB.11 (“Fighter-Bomber”) became the most widely produced version of the Sea Fury. In addition to air superiority duties, it was designed to carry rockets, bombs, and external fuel tanks, allowing it to perform ground-attack, maritime strike, and close air support missions. The aircraft saw extensive combat during the Korean War, where Fleet Air Arm squadrons successfully employed it against both ground targets and enemy aircraft. Most notably, a Sea Fury achieved one of the few confirmed victories by a piston-engine fighter over a jet aircraft when it shot down a MiG-15 in 1952.
Today, the Hawker Sea Fury remains one of the most celebrated post-war piston-engine fighters. Its powerful radial engine, elegant lines, and remarkable performance have made it a favorite among aviation historians, museum collections, airshow performers, and scale model enthusiasts alike.
