The T-72AMT is a Ukrainian combat upgrade of the Soviet T-72A tank, developed by the Kyiv Armored Plant starting in 2017. The program emerged directly from operational experiences in the Donbas region beginning in 2014, with the aim of cost-effectively modernizing obsolete T-72 stocks held in storage depots and utilizing them as a strategic reserve. Following intensive state trials, serial deliveries to the Ukrainian Armed Forces commenced in 2020. In the wake of the full-scale Russian invasion starting in 2022, production was pragmatically adapted; this led to the development of simplified "front-line modifications" in which hard-to-obtain pre-war components were flexibly replaced with available alternatives.
Technically, the AMT upgrade massively enhances this 1980s-era tank across all core areas. The firepower of the 125mm smoothbore cannon has been augmented by the 1K13-49 gunner's sight, which enables the firing of the Ukrainian laser-guided "Kombat" anti-tank guided missile at ranges of up to five kilometers. The crew also benefits from modernized night vision equipment and a remotely controlled 12.7mm weapon station mounted on the commander's cupola—operable from inside the turret—which effectively protects the commander during combat.
The protection of the tank—weighing approximately 47 tons—has been optimized through the extensive application of Ukrainian "Nizh" (Knife) explosive reactive armor, as well as the addition of cage armor at the rear, designed to defeat modern tandem-charge warheads and RPGs. The necessary mobility is provided by a more powerful 840-horsepower V-84-1 diesel engine, which—in the pre-war variant—was paired with the wider tracks originally designed for the T-80 tank. The modernization is rounded off by state-of-the-art electronics: a rearview camera facilitates maneuvering for the driver, while satellite-based navigation and encrypted, NATO-compatible digital radios (including those from Aselsan) ensure command and control capabilities in modern joint-arms combat.
