The Sd.Kfz. 250/4 is based on the Sd.Kfz. 250, a light armored half-track developed from 1939 onwards. This served as a versatile platform for numerous specializations (radio, observation, mortar, etc.).

The Sd.Kfz. 250/4 was developed around 1942 as an attempt to provide mobile anti-aircraft defense for advancing units.

The key element was its anti-aircraft armament:

• 2 × MG 34 machine guns in twin 36mm mounts
• Traverse:
  • 360° rotation
  • Elevation: -10° to +90°

The mount, specifically designed for anti-aircraft defense, featured an armored shield and could be operated by a single soldier. It was effective against low-flying aircraft and infantry, but lacked sufficient penetration against armored aircraft or targets.
