The vehicle designated VK 9.03 (7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70) is a highly interesting example of the German efforts during the Second World War to mount increasingly powerful armaments onto ever smaller chassis. It was primarily a design project, or concept vehicle, developed by the Alkett company in 1943, which never reached series production.
The abbreviation VK 9.03 originally referred to a planned chassis for the Panzer II Ausf. H. It was a further development of the Panzer II with the aim of creating a faster and better-sprung chassis in the "10-ton class."
Since the conventional Panzer IIs were already completely obsolete as main battle tanks by the end of 1942/beginning of 1943, new applications were sought. The Alkett company proposed mounting the powerful 7.5 cm PaK 42 L/70 gun – the same cannon used in the famous "Panther" – onto this lighter chassis.
