In 1966, the Formula One regulations were changed, and a switch from 1.5-liter to 3-liter engines was announced. Having finally achieved success the previous year with the 1.5-liter RA272, the inexperienced Honda engineers unfortunately had to start from scratch again, and the RA273 wasn't ready until the Italian Grand Prix in the autumn of 1966. With Richie Ginther at the wheel, the car proved to be more powerful than its competitors, and Ginther finished the season in a respectable fourth place. After competing for almost the entire 1967 season, the RA273 was finally replaced by the significantly improved RA300.
