The R390 GT1 takes its name from the R380, which captivated Japanese motorsport enthusiasts over thirty years ago. Developed jointly by Nissan and TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), the R390 GT1 represents the pinnacle of both companies' racing expertise. The aerodynamically optimized, low-slung, and elegant bodywork is reminiscent of Nissan's highly competitive Group C race cars of the 1980s. The 3.5-liter V8 engine, producing an impressive 600 hp, is directly bolted to the carbon fiber composite monocoque, which also serves as a stressed member. The enormous power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a transversely mounted six-speed gearbox. The four-wheel double wishbone suspension is connected to the horizontally mounted shock absorbers via pushrods and bellcranks, ensuring optimal handling.
Three R390 GT1s competed in the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans, including car number 21, which secured pole position in the pre-qualifying race. Although the overall result was rather disappointing, the R390's outstanding performance in the early stages of the race was impressive and promising for the following year.
