One of the system's greatest strengths was the combination of its armament and integrated radar. This allowed the ZSU-23-4 to independently acquire, track, and engage targets without relying on external fire control. This represented a significant advancement in mobile air defense when it was introduced in the 1960s. In addition to its primary role against aerial targets, its high firepower also led to its frequent use in support of ground troops against infantry, light vehicles, and fortified positions.
The crew typically consists of four men: commander, driver, gunner, and radar operator. The vehicle features full armor plating that provides protection against small arms fire and shrapnel, while its tracked chassis ensures excellent off-road mobility. With a top speed of approximately 50 km/h, the ZSU-23-4 could escort mechanized units and provide them with air defense cover during their advance.
The M2 and M4 variants received various upgrades to their radar, fire control, and communication systems over the course of their service life to enhance their effectiveness against more modern aerial threats. Although the ZSU-23-4 has since been supplemented or replaced by guided missile air defense systems in many armies, it is considered one of the best-known and most successful self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicles of the Cold War and was used in numerous conflicts worldwide.
