The Object 279 was a Soviet heavy main battle tank prototype developed in the late 1950s. The vehicle was notable for its unusual design with four tracks and a streamlined, elliptical hull. This design was intended to improve off-road mobility, prevent sinking in soft ground, and increase resistance to the shockwave of a nuclear explosion. The Object 279 was armed with a 130mm gun and had very strong armor for its time. Despite promising test results, the project remained at the prototype stage, as the Soviet military leadership decided against further development of heavy tanks in the early 1960s. The only surviving example is now located in the Kubinka Tank Museum.
