U.S. Battleship BB-62 New Jersey

Einloggen und Bewertung schreiben

The BB-62 USS New Jersey was the most decorated battleship in the history of the US Navy from 1943 to 1991.
In 1943, she was commissioned as the second of a total of six Iowa-class battleships.
Numbers five and six, the BB-65 Illinois and the BB-66 Kentucky, however, were not completed and were eventually dismantled.
Like the other Iowa-class vessels, the USS New Jersey had a displacement of 45,000 tons as well as a power of 21,000 hp and an armament of nine 16-inch (40.6 cm) guns distributed over three turrets (2 fore and 1 aft) with a maximum range of up to 40 km.
The Iowa-class vessels were 270.4 m long and had a relatively narrow hull of 33 m maximum, so they could easily pass through the Panama Canal.
After serving in major battles in the Pacific during World War II, the USS New Jersey was returned from reserve to active service for both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
In 1982, the vessel was completely refurbished, modernised and equipped with the latest weapons technology.
After the Lebanon conflict, the New Jersey was still in service in the 1991 Gulf War and was then finally decommissioned.
