Supermarine Spitfire Mk.XVIe

Einloggen und Bewertung schreiben
The legendary Supermarine Spitfire is often credited with saving England in World War II.
Among its many variants was the Mk.XVI, a Mk.IX cell powered by a Merlin 266 engine built under licence by the Packard Motor Car Company in the United States.
Most Mk.XVIs had a larger rudder and an E-type wing with two 20mm guns and two 12.7mm machine guns.
With the introduction of the teardrop canopy, the capacity of the rear upper fuel tank was reduced to 33 gallons and that of the front lower fuel tank was increased to 48 gallons to compensate.
From September 1944 to July 1945, 1054 Mk.XVIs were produced.
During the war they were used on the Western Front and served as fighter-bombers.
In the post-war period, the Mk.XVI was used by the RAF and the Belgian and Greek air forces until the early 1950s.
