The Lockheed F-104G Starfighter was one of the most well-known - and controversial - combat aircraft of the Cold War. The American manufacturer Lockheed originally developed the F-104 as a lightweight, extremely fast interceptor. The F-104G variant, by contrast, was designed as a versatile multi-role combat aircraft for European NATO air forces.

The F-104G became particularly well-known through its service with the German Air Force and the German Naval Air Arm. In Germany, it earned the infamous nickname "widowmaker" due to a high number of serious flight accidents.
