A Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) cadet was an officer, as opposed to a police officer, who entered the police force through cadet training rather than as a rank-and-file officer. While the term "cadet" could refer to those who joined the police with the goal of becoming officers, it was also used—sometimes as "temporary cadet" or in connection with the Auxiliary Police—for those who joined the RIC for a limited period, such as during the Irish War of Independence.

During the Irish War of Independence, the RIC faced massive public boycotts and attacks by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). It was reinforced by recruits from Great Britain—the Black and Tans and the Auxiliary Police—who became notorious for police brutality and attacks on civilians. The Ulster Special Constabulary (USC) was established to reinforce the RIC across much of the northern province of Ulster.
