Piper L-4 "Cub in Post War Service"

Einloggen und Bewertung schreiben
It soon became clear to the US military and the British RAF that the rather large and complicated types such as the O-47 or the Lysander, which had been developed in the pre-war period for army cooperation, close support, artillery observation and liaison tasks, were not suitable for real-world operations. Lighter types with the capability of very short take-offs and landings proved to be much more successful.
Probably the most famous type in this category is the L-4 Grasshopper, which was developed from the originally civilian J-3 Cub and did very well in pre-war US Army exercises.
The L-4 proved its worth during the war, but also later when it contributed to the development of sport aviation as the US began to sell off surplus aircraft cheaply. And many of these ex-warmascines continue to fly to this day.
