Panzerjäger II für PaK 40 (Sd.Kfz.131) early

In the initial phase of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the Marder II was deployed against the overwhelmingly superior Russian T-34 and KV-2 tanks.

By 1941, it had become clear that not only the Panzer III and IV, but also the 5cm Pak 38 anti-tank gun were no longer sufficiently effective. As a result, the 7.5cm Pak 40 was developed, capable of penetrating 130mm thick armor plates from a range of 1000m with a rate of fire of up to 14 rounds per minute.

The Marder II was fitted with the Pak 40 in an open fighting compartment, mounted on the chassis of the Panzer II.

Production began in mid-1942.
