Its capabilities—speed, service ceiling, armament, and long range—allowed it to efficiently reach a distant target, photograph it, and return safely to base. Unlike the Spitfire, for example, the Mustang only required the installation of photographic equipment to be used as a long-range aerial reconnaissance aircraft.
The F-6C reconnaissance Mustang was a modification of the P-51B/C fighter.
Most F-6Cs were built at the North American plant in Dallas and differed from the fighters produced there primarily in the openings for camera installation. The photographic equipment was installed at the modification centers in Love Field and Kansas City. In this way, 230 production F-6Cs were produced. In addition, more than 50 P-51B/C fighters were converted into reconnaissance aircraft at overseas depots and combat units. The reconnaissance Mustangs proved their worth in both high-altitude missions with a vertical camera and tactical low-level reconnaissance with a tilted camera. Their armament also enabled them to engage enemy aircraft in aerial combat. They were used by the US Army and Allied air forces in Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Far East.
