The Hellenic Air Force's McDonnell Douglas F-4E AUP Phantom II was a modernized version of the famous F-4 Phantom II. Under the Avionics Upgrade Program (AUP), the Greek F-4Es underwent extensive modernization starting in the 1990s to maintain their operational capability well into the 21st century. The aircraft received modern avionics, improved radar, new navigation and weapons systems, and the capability to employ modern air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons. As a result, the Phantom remained a capable combat aircraft of the Hellenic Air Force, despite its original 1960s design.

The modernized aircraft were primarily operated by the 338th and 339th Squadrons at Andravida Air Base. The Greek Phantoms were characterized by their striking camouflage schemes and long service life. The F-4E AUP remained one of the last active Phantom models in Europe and was used for both air defense and attack missions. Despite its age, the aircraft was still considered an impressive fighter due to its high speed, powerful armament, and robust construction.
