The Hawker Hurricane Mk I in its tropical configuration was an adaptation of early production Hurricane models for use in extreme conditions, including high temperatures, dust, and intense sunlight.
The most distinctive feature of the tropical version was the Vokes air filter mounted under the engine cowling, which protected the engine from dust and sand. While its use reduced performance, it significantly improved reliability in these harsh climatic conditions. In addition to the filter, minor operational and equipment modifications were made. For example, during the tropical variant's production, additional vents were added to the side of the fuselage below the cockpit.
The Hurricane Mk I Trop retained the typical early armament of eight 7.69 mm (.303 in) wing-mounted machine guns.
The Hurricane Mk I Trop saw service from 1940 onward in the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and East Africa, including Malta, Kenya, and Ethiopia. There, it participated in both fighter missions and escort and support duties. Aircraft of this version took part in the first carrier-based fighter deliveries to Malta, as well as in the RAF and SAAF's North African campaign. From 1941 onward, the Hurricane Mk I Trop was gradually replaced by the newer Hurricane Mk IIb and Mk IIc variants, which offered greater firepower and improved performance. However, it remained in service alongside the newer versions for some time.
In its early days, the Mk I Trop aircraft often retained the standard Temperate Land Scheme camouflage (dark green/dark brown), which was sometimes repainted in the field under desert conditions. Usually, the dark green areas were replaced with the color later known as "central stone," which was applied directly to the existing surfaces. During this period, there were various underside color variations, depending on the time, location, and unit.
