The Flakpanzer IV "Wirbelwind" was introduced in 1944 during World War II and served as mobile anti-aircraft defense for German armored units against Allied air attacks. It was based on the Panzer IV chassis and was a further development of earlier Flakpanzers such as the Möbelwagen. Only about 87 to 105 vehicles were built in total, mostly by converting existing tanks, which limited its actual significance on the battlefield. Towards the end of the war, it was partially replaced by the more powerful Flakpanzer IV Ostwind.

Technically, the Wirbelwind weighed around 22 tons and had a crew of five. It was powered by a Maybach HL120 TRM engine producing approximately 300 hp, giving it a top speed of about 40 km/h and a range of roughly 200 kilometers. Its armor thickness ranged from about 10 to 80 millimeters, depending on the section. Its main armament consisted of four 2 cm Flak 38 guns in a quad mount, supplemented by a 7.92 mm MG34 machine gun for close-range defense. The open, polygonal turret was particularly striking, necessitated by the heavy smoke produced by the guns.

In practice, the Wirbelwind was characterized by a very high rate of fire, making it especially effective against low-flying aircraft. However, the penetrating power of the 2 cm guns was often insufficient against more robust Allied aircraft. At the same time, it proved surprisingly effective against ground targets such as infantry and lightly armored vehicles. Overall, the Wirbelwind was a typical example of a late, pragmatic war development: quickly implemented, tactically useful, but limited in its effectiveness by small production numbers and technical limitations.
