With its 47mm caliber and high muzzle velocity, the SA 37 possessed excellent penetrating power for its time. It was capable of penetrating the armor of almost all German armored vehicles of 1940 at standard combat ranges, including the more heavily armored variants of the Panzer III and Panzer IV. Consequently, it was considered one of the best anti-tank guns in its class and was superior to many comparable foreign designs.
The gun was primarily deployed in the anti-tank companies of French infantry divisions, as well as in motorized and mechanized units. Due to its weight, it was less mobile than the lighter 25mm gun but offered significantly greater firepower. The guns were typically deployed in prepared positions, enabling them to engage enemy tanks at medium to long ranges.
During the German campaign in the West in the spring of 1940, the 47 mm SA 37 proved to be a highly effective weapon. However, numbers remained relatively low, as production had only begun shortly before the outbreak of the war and the French armed forces had not yet been fully equipped. Consequently, its impact on the course of the fighting was limited, even though German troops certainly respected its performance.
Following France's capitulation, the Wehrmacht took over numerous captured guns, designating them the 4.7 cm Pak 181(f). These guns were employed for tasks such as security duties, coastal defense, and use in fortified positions. Their high penetration capability ensured they remained militarily useful for some time while in German service.
Today, the 47 mm SA 37 anti-tank gun is regarded as one of the most modern and capable French anti-tank weapons of 1940. It demonstrates that the French arms industry possessed advanced designs prior to World War II—designs whose full potential, however, could only be partially realized due to the weapon's brief period of service and the events of the campaign in France.
