The British 2-gallon fuel canisters, known as "Flimsies," were used extensively in World War II, particularly in the desert campaigns of North Africa. Made of thin sheet metal, they held approximately 9 liters of fuel. Their simple and rapid manufacturing allowed for mass production, which was advantageous given the enormous logistical demands.

However, Flimsies were technically problematic: their thin-walled construction made them susceptible to leaks, damage, and evaporation. Furthermore, poor workmanship or inadequate sealing could cause leaks, resulting not only in fuel losses but also posing a safety risk. Historically, these weaknesses led to significant fuel losses, hampering the supply of British troops, especially those in remote theaters of operations.

In comparison, more robust designs, such as the standard German Wehrmacht jerrycan, proved to be significantly more reliable. This experience later influenced the development of standardized, more durable fuel cans, which were adopted internationally after the war.
