Based on the Vampire FB.5, the F.20 featured modifications for carrier landings, including a tailhook and an adapted landing gear system. It made its maiden flight in October 1948. Of the 30 aircraft originally ordered, 18 were built and delivered. They were primarily used for testing and training purposes. The slow acceleration of early jet engines limited their suitability as operational carrier-based fighters.
