At the start of WW2, the British Army used lots of 30 cwt (centum weight) trucks based on civilian models. Early models of the Austin K30 had an open cab with a folding roof and canvas "doors" and no windshield. This airy cab earned them the nickname pneumonia wagon. Later models got an enclosed cab made of tin. Powered by a 6-speed Cylinder Otto engine, he could transport about 1.5 tons of cargo.

Trucks of this type were used in North Africa and with the British Expeditionary Force in France. They were also delivered to the Soviet Union as part of the Lend & Lease agreement. A large quantity was abandoned near Dunkirk in 1940 and thus ended up in the service of the German Wehrmacht.
