The so-called US military "8-ft Storage Containers" were not a single, fixed design, but rather early standardized steel containers used by the US Army with a base dimension of approximately eight feet. These containers arose from the need for more efficient military logistics after World War II. Early precursors appeared in the late 1940s with the "Transporter" system, from which the CONEX containers developed in the early 1950s. These were robust, stackable steel containers with uniform external dimensions that could be quickly loaded by crane or forklift and offered protection from the elements, loss, and damage.

From the Korean War onward, and especially during the Vietnam War, these containers were widely used to transport supplies such as ammunition, spare parts, rations, and equipment directly to the operational area or to serve as stationary storage facilities. They often remained permanently in the field and were also flexibly used as workshops, radio rooms, or accommodations. Their standardization significantly reduced transshipment times and they are considered an important step toward modern container logistics. This system later evolved into the ISO containers that are common today, as well as modular military variants.
