The M24 Chaffee light tank was developed by the U.S. toward the end of World War II to replace outdated models such as the M5 Stuart. Named after U.S. General Adna R. Chaffee Jr., it entered frontline service in 1944 and proved its worth with a significantly improved combination of firepower, mobility, and reliability.

Technically, the M24 was equipped with a 75 mm gun, originally designed for aircraft, which gave it unusually high penetration power for a light tank. Its armament was supplemented by several machine guns. Powered by two Cadillac V8 engines, it reached speeds of approximately 55 km/h and had a range of around 160 km. Its armor remained relatively light (a maximum of about 25 mm), which suited its role as a reconnaissance and support vehicle.

The M24 saw action in Europe during the final months of the war and was subsequently used in the Pacific and the Korean War. However, it became apparent that it was only partially effective against heavier Soviet tanks like the T-34. Nevertheless, due to its maneuverability and reliability, the Chaffee remained in service with many armies worldwide long after the war and is considered one of the most successful light tanks of its time.
