The Grumman F4F-3 Wildcat, one of the US Navy's most important carrier-based fighter aircraft, began service in 1940.
The F4F-4 entered service in 1942.
This aircraft had a folding wing for efficient use on flight decks.
Six instead of four12.7mm machine guns were fitted.
With its robust airframe fuselage and the tactics of its pilots, the F4F-F was more than a match for the Zero fighter.

The Wildcat was also used by the Royal Navy and was known as the Martlet (fictitious bird often seen on British coats of arms). This aircraft continued to be used for anti-submarine patrol and convoy escort until the end of the war.
