The Tiger I was a German heavy tank of the Second World War, used from 1942 onwards.
Normally organised into independent heavy tank battalions.
It provided the German army with its first tank to use the 8.8cm KwK-36 gun (derived from the 8.8cm Flak 36).
A platoon of four Tiger Is was deployed near Leningrad on 23 September 1942.
Since they were deployed in the swampy, wooded terrain, their movement was largely limited to roads and tracks, which severely limited their operational capability.
Many of these early Tigers had problems with the transmission, which could not cope with the heavy weight of the vehicle.
It took a while for drivers to learn not to overload the engine and transmission.
The Tiger with the turret number 100 got stuck in the swampy terrain and had to be abandoned.
It could be salvaged largely undamaged, so the Soviets were able to analyse its construction.
