The T-55A Model 1981 was an upgraded variant of the Soviet T-55A, developed starting in the late 1970s or early 1980s as part of modernization programs. The designation "Model 1981" is frequently applied to vehicles featuring various improvements, including enhanced protection measures and modifications to equipment and observation systems. The T-55A remained armed with the 100mm D-10T2S rifled gun and a coaxial 7.62mm machine gun; a 12.7mm DShK machine gun could also be mounted on the turret roof.

A distinctive feature of this version is the KMT-5M mine roller. This Soviet mine-clearing device is attached to the front of the tank and is designed to detonate anti-tank mines through mechanical pressure on the ground or to clear them from the vehicle's path. The KMT-5M consists of two roller units positioned in front of the tracks. Its robust design enabled the T-55A to breach minefields under combat conditions. Thus, the T-55A Model 1981 with KMT-5M combines the classic T-55 armament and design with a mine-clearing capability that was vital for Soviet armored forces.
